Millhills Lodge has been the dream of its owners well before we met; before we searched our souls and then embarked upon an incredible journey together.
We are Penny and Sam - your hosts, cooks, story tellers, concierge, tour guides and world travellers and together it is our intention to make your stay with us one that exceeds your expectations and that Millhills befits your desire for respite, relaxation and rejuvenation as you travel through this beautiful country of ours that we call home. In the Maori language we would use the word - minarapa – to seek what you earnestly desire.
We are both 5th generation New Zealanders with a relationship with our homeland that dates back to the early 1800’s. In fact, Penny is a direct descendent of The Rev. Henry Williams, who together with his son Edward, translated to Maori New Zealand’s “founding document” - The Treaty of Waitangi - signed on the shores of the Bay of Islands, 6th February, 1840 by Captain William Hobson and 530 Maori chiefs.
Sam’s family arrived in New Zealand in 1856 embarking at the then French settlement of Akaroa, Banks Peninsular. Many of his early family were also settlers, school teachers, book keepers and artists. His great Uncle, Sapper Horace Millichamp Moore-Jones was a member of the 1st New Zealand Expeditionary Force in the Gallipoli landings of 1915 and painted the famous “A Man with His Donkey” - nowadays portrayed as a very integral element of the infamous ANZAC legend.
Millhills Lodge is located on family land, Waikaha Station; a famous Scottish Short Horn Bull stud in the 1950’s and ‘60’s which was established in 1928.
The Lodge was designed by us in its entirety for both accommodation and for use as a private venue. It is predominantly constructed of either sustainable or recycled materials and although of a contemporary design, from what our guests tell us, it exudes a sense of spirituality, calm and warmth.
Welcome to Millhills Lodge. We trust that you will enjoy your time with us, that you make yourself at home and you enjoy genuine New Zealand heartland hospitality.
